About me

I'm Peter, a Registered Psychologist and Credentialed Eating Disorder Clinician. I provide evidence-based psychological treatment to adolescents and adults experiencing a range of common mental health concerns, with a particular focus on treating eating disorders, depression, anxiety, as well as the other challenges that often accompany these. I have spent the past 15 or so years in either clinical research, intervention development, service evaluation, or providing individual and group psychological therapy.

I am originally from Germany, where I grew up and first discovered my interest in eating disorders after completing an undergraduate placement in an eating disorders service. I then moved to London to complete a PhD in Psychological Medicine at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, within the Section of Eating Disorders at King's College London. Under the primary supervision of Professor Ulrike Schmidt, I developed and evaluated an online intervention programme for university students experiencing common mental health problems, including eating disorders, depression, anxiety, and substance use.

Being part of this world-leading eating disorders team, I received clinical training in the Maudsley Model of Anorexia Nervosa Treatment for Adults (MANTRA) and delivered therapy at the Maudsley Hospital Eating Disorders Outpatient Service as a trainee psychologist. During this time, I also set up and co-facilitated with a small group of other PhD students, a student-run self-help group for students with eating disorders. Following the completion of my PhD, I remained at the Institute where I was a postdoctoral research worker leading the development of the e-mental health research strategy under Prof. Nicholas Tarrier.

In 2015, I moved to Adelaide, where I now call home and continued to work in various roles in the mental health sector. After all my years of research experience and a growing desire to also work clinically alongside this, I completed a Master of Clinical Psychology at Flinders University. During this time, I also explored a longstanding interest in forensic psychology and have since been working as a Senior Rehabilitation Psychologist with the Department for Correctional Services, delivering group-based rehabilitation programmes within custodial settings.

Publications

My focus on eating disorders and common mental health treatment has remained and I continue to publish in the field and provide evidence-based psychological therapy through my private practice. Click here for a list of my publications.

Treatment

I provide evidence-based, compassionate individual therapy for a range of common mental health challenges—including depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, and eating disorders. Over the years, I've found that many of these issues are deeply interconnected, especially during key life transitions.

One area I'm particularly passionate about is supporting young people as they navigate the transition into adulthood—whether that's moving out of home, starting university, entering the workforce, or building a sense of identity. This period can be emotionally intense, and I work with teens and young adults (aged 16 and up) to help them build resilience, manage stress, and develop healthier coping strategies.

My therapeutic approach is grounded in proven methods like Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and Enhanced CBT for Eating Disorders, and the Maudsley Model of Anorexia Nervosa Treatment for Adults (MANTRA).

These approaches are especially effective for helping people understand their thoughts and behaviours, and build practical tools to manage symptoms and improve well-being.

I work with individuals who are experiencing difficulties with eating, body image, or mental health more broadly—whether that's anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, ARFID, or other eating disorders. I also support those dealing with depression, anxiety, or substance use, especially when these issues overlap with developmental or life-stage changes.

Therapy happens in person at my Brighton clinic, or via telehealth for those based outside Adelaide—making it accessible whether you're in person or connecting from afar.

Supervision

I'm a Credentialed Eating Disorder Clinician and Board-Approved Supervisor, with over a decade of clinical experience in body image and eating disorders. I have been providing supervision for the past 6 or so years to psychologists across all stages of their careers, from provisional, registrars, through to endorsed, and really enjoy supporting both those new to this work and those seeking to deepen their practice. I work primarily with adults, so my primary treatment approaches are CBT-E/CBT-ED and MANTRA.

Whether you're building your confidence with evidence-based treatments or looking to reflect on complex presentations, I'd love to support your work.

Supervision is available online, or face-to-face in my clinic in Brighton, Adelaide. If you would like to found out more, please get in touch here.
